Dr. James Witte

Dr. James Witte is a Professor of Sociology, the Director of the Institute for Immigration Research (IIR), and the Director of the Center for Social Science Research (CSSR) at George Mason University. He has held academic appointments at Clemson University, Northwestern University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Dr. Witte holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. from Beloit College.  

As Director of the IIR, Dr. Witte helps to highlights the economic, civic and cultural contributions of all immigrants to the U.S., with a close look at the Pakistani diaspora. In the past five years alone, Dr. Witte has also made ten trips to Pakistan as part of collaborative projects with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad and the Department of Public Administration at the University of Karachi (UoK). Both collaborations seek to build social science research capacity in Pakistan with an eye to improving evidence based planning and decision-making. With support from the Fulbright Specialist Program, Dr. Witte has given a series of workshops at NUST on research methods. Additionally, he has successfully brokered a Memorandum of Understanding between NUST and Mason, through which NUST scholars will come to George Mason to earn doctoral degrees in the social sciences.
