Imagine living in a refugee camp without electricity. This was the situation that the 36,000 residents of the Jalozai camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs)—located 35 kilometers from Peshawar — found themselves in before PepsiCo stepped in with the “Lighting Up Lives” initiative. Launched in 2014, the program provides communities in need with solar lights installed in recycled Pepsi bottles.

“Lighting Up Lives” is part of PepsiCo’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in Pakistan. Through CSR, companies engage in initiatives which benefit society. One common approach to CSR is corporate philanthropy through which aid given to nonprofit organizations and communities. Companies contribute in areas such as the arts, education, housing, health, social welfare, and the environment.
Aside from “Lighting Up Lives,” another aspect of PepsiCo’s CSR in Pakistan is support of The Citizen’s Foundation (TCF) in its mission to improve educational opportunities for Pakistani children. In 2012, the company partnered with TCF to build a soccer field. In addition, the company sponsored schools in flood-hit areas. PepsiCo employees also routinely volunteer at TCF schools as part of its “Helping Hands” program.
PepsiCo’s Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer, Global Research and Development, Dr. Mehmood Khan, who also serves as a member of APF’s Board of Directors, guides the company’s sustainability initiatives, which help protect and conserve global water supplies and provide access to safe water. He also oversees PepsiCo’s “Food For Good,” a program in the fight against hunger here in the US. “PepsiCo’s Performance with Purpose goals have guided our strategy and operations every step along our journey by aligning what is good for our business with what is good for society and the planet,” states Dr. Khan. “Lighting up Lives in vulnerable communities in Pakistan is part of PepsiCo’s investment in the future.”
PepsiCo’s “Lighting Up Lives” initiative and its collaboration with TCF help to improve the lives of vulnerable Pakistani communities. APF invites readers to learn more about strategic partnerships such as PepsiCo’s CSR program in future newsletters.
